Welcome to the Section of Endocrinology and Metabolism
The Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism is an organization of endocrinologists for both the University of Calgary and Alberta Health Services. We currently number 17 Endocrinologists who cover subspecialty interests across the breadth of endocrinology and with responsibility for clinical services across the Calgary Zone and Southern Alberta. We provide education from undergraduate to postgraduate and continuing medical education at the University of Calgary and run an acclaimed, Royal College certified specialty training program in Endocrinology (details elsewhere on this website).
Inter-disciplinary clinics providing care for endocrine chronic diseases and under the auspices of the Division include Alberta Health Services' Diabetes, Hypertension and Cholesterol Centre (DHCC) and Regional Osteoporosis Centre which together with the Endocrine Testing Unit will soon centralize at the Richmond Road Treatment and Diagnostic Centre. These Divisional programs have strong links with Chronic Disease management strategies in Alberta Health Services. The Division also participates in Thyroid Cancer and Neuro-endocrine cancer clinics operated by the Alberta Cancer Board. Inpatient consultative service is provided to the three acute care hospitals in Calgary.
Division members are active in research, particularly in the areas of metabolic diseases such as osteoporosis and diabetes and with affiliations with the University of Calgary’s Research Institutes (Libin Heart Institute, Snyder Institute for Infection, Inflammation, Immunity and the Bone and Joint Institute) or the Julia MacFarlane Diabetes Research Unit.
Recruitment remains a Divisional requirement: in particular for clinician scientists. The marked growth in the population of Calgary is also likely to continue to add pressure to the demand for clinical services.
