Prerequisite
Candidates applying for training in geriatric medicine must have completed three years of training in internal medicine.
Program Outline
The Section of Geriatric Medicine at the University of Calgary offers a two-year RCPSC-accredited training program for those interested in either a clinical or an academic career as a consultant in geriatrics.
While there are required rotations in geriatric medicine, geriatric psychiatry, and physical medicine & rehabilitation during the first year of the program, the residency can be adapted to meet the particular needs of the trainee. Training with the opportunity to practice learned skills is provided in medical administration relevant to a practicing geriatrician. Research opportunities in clinical geriatrics are provided. Residents are paired with an active researcher in the Section of Geriatric Medicine during their first year. They are to initiate and complete a research project during their two years.
Seminars and Rounds
During the two years of the residency the trainee is expected to attend and participate in structured educational events such as Medical Grand Rounds, Sectional rounds, Sectional journal club, a medical-legal day, and the Sectional seminar series that is geared to deal with their specific learning needs. Financial support will be provided to attend local conferences, one relevant national medical conference yearly (e.g., the Annual Meeting of the Canadian Geriatrics Society), and the Physician Management Institute-Part I.
Resources
The abundant clinical resources within the Calgary Region ensure that all necessary components of training are available. The program utilizes opportunities in the three adult acute care hospital sites in Calgary, a variety of local community-based programs and the option of a rotation at the Lethbridge Regional Hospital.
