Section of Hematology - Announcements
The Section has been recognized on numerous occasions for excellence in clinical care and teaching. In 2005, the Department of Medicine established awards for members of the Department who were nominated by their peers as being excellent clinicians.
- The Department of Medicine Quality Improvement and Patient Safety Award was recently awarded (November 2008) to the Blood and Marrow Transplant Program, Section of Hematology and Hematologic Malignancies. This award recognizes significant contributions within the Department of Medicine in the area of quality improvement and patient safety in the Blood and Marrow Transplant Program; the high quality of care for patients, commitment to improved care delivery and the high quality of its guidelines and patient-focused approach.
- In 2005 Dr. Ben Ruether received the John Dawson Award at the FMC and Dr. Walter Blahey received the Howard McEwen Award at the PLC. In addition, Dr. Ted Thaell received the 2005 Rockyview General Hospital Medical Staff Association Award for Clinical Excellence in the Department of Medicine. Dr. Man-Chiu Poon received the Alberta Centennial Medallion Award with Certificate of Alberta Centennial in December, 2005, as recognition by the Province of Alberta for outstanding work, achievements and volunteering efforts for the people, communities, and province of Alberta, while in 2008, Dr Poon received the World Federation of Hemophilia International Healthcare Volunteer Award. In 2006, Dr. Graham Pineo received the Professionalism Award in recognition of his work over the years in many different roles, leadership and contributions within the Department of Medicine and impact on the Calgary Health Region.
- In addition to the above, Dr. Karen Valentine received the prestigious 2005 Golden Bull Award for Excellence in Teaching within the Department of Medicine, and several Section members have received Gold Star Awards and Canadian Medical Student Association Letter of Excellence Awards for Teaching over the past several years. In 2007, Dr. Allan Jones received the Gold Star Teacher Undergrad Education (20th consecutive year), Lamp of Learning for Excellence in Teaching Class of 2008, and was the first recipient of the newly created undergraduate teaching award: "The Allan R. Jones Award for Educational Leadership" for demonstrating tremendous enthusiasm, innovation and compassion while in a leadership position.
