The University of Calgary medical library is located in the medical school in the Foothills Medical Centre. The library subscribes to an extensive selection of medical journals. The University of Calgary has numerous on-line journals. In addition, the University is part of the Canadian National Site Licensing Project (CNSLP). All online journals, MD consult as well as the CNSLP can be accessed through the Internet at any of the teaching sites free of charge. There is a tutorial on accessing electronic journals during the first week to ensure all the residents are familiar with this source of information. There are smaller libraries at the Peter Lougheed Centre and the Rockyview General Hospital.

The University provides health services on a 24-hour basis. They include: prompt on-campus medical care, referral to specialists and admission to the infirmary when necessary. In addition, residents in the Department of Internal Medicine may access the services of the Occupational Health Offices in the Foothills Hospital (Ground Floor) on the Peter Lougheed Center (Level O - Room 0629).
Students not covered under Alberta Health Care Insurance, or another provincial insurance plans, are advised to contact the University Health Services regarding medical protection. For all residents in the Department of Internal Medicine, application for Alberta Health Care Insurance must be completed on the first day of reporting to the Foothills Hospital.
Campus Recreation
Residents in the Department of Internal Medicine are considered to be full-time post-graduate students in the Faculty of Medicine but must have annually validated student cards (available on the second floor of the main library building) to use the Library and Recreational facilities. All full-time students are eligible to participate in the campus recreation program once they pay the Campus Recreation fee. A valid full-time student's card is sufficient proof of registration in order to use other facilities.
The Campus Recreation Program is composed of eight constituent parts:
Open Recreation
The Physical Education center consists of three gymnasiums; 50 meter swimming pool; 15 squash, 8 racquetball and 6 outdoor tennis courts; 200 meter 6 land indoor track; 2 aerobics rooms; weight training center; combatives room; three-story climbing wall; and outdoor center.
Intramural Sports
A wide variety of individual and team leagues, tournaments and special events from flag-football to trail riding are available.
Sport Clubs
The Sport Club program provides opportunities for instruction, recreation, competition and social affiliation in a variety of activities not always offered in the traditional intramural and adult sports instruction programs. Combatives, dance, martial arts, racquets, field, winter and water sports are all represented in this program.
Fitness Programs
A full range of aerobics, fitness testing and strength training programs are available.
Adult Sports Instruction
Courses are available in the following areas: dance, fitness, racquet, aquatics, outdoors, leadership development and special interest.
Children and Youth Programs
A comprehensive range of sports clinics and a mini-university are offered.
Aquatics Programs
A complete program including water fitness, stroke improvement, beginner, intermediate and advanced swimming lessons, as well as Royal Life Saving and Red Cross certification courses are offered.

Outdoor equipment rentals (summer and winter equipment rentals are available through the Outdoor Program Center at 220-5038, Room 180 in the Physical Education Building, and can be reserved by phone. A 10% discount is available if you have a campus recreation membership. Repairs to personal equipment such as bikes, skis, tents, sleeping bag zippers, etc. are also available).
