Dr. Alexander Leung Drs. David Bates, William Ghali Evaluating the Impact of Computerized Physician Order Entry in Community Hospitals
  • Dr. Matthew James from the Division of Nephrology was the recipient of the Izaak Walton Kellan Memorial Trust Award. The award is given to a candidate "likely to contribute to the advancement of learning or to win distinction in a profession, not be a one-sided person as special distinction of intellect should be founded upon sound character."

  • Dr. Stephen Field from the Division of Respirology received the Dr. Norman L. Jones Award. This is awarded to the first author of an original article published in the Canadian Respiratory Journal and judged by the Associate Editors as having the greatest potential impact on Respiratory Medicine.

  • Dr. Carla Coffin from the Division of Gastroenterology was the recipient of the 2010 American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases (AASLD) Clinical and Translational Research Award in Liver Diseases for her research project entitled "Molecular Characterization of HBV Reservoirs".

National Health Sciences Academy

Three members of the DOM have been invited to join the prestigious Canadian Academy of Health Sciences (CAHS). Dr. Marvin Fritzler, Dr. William Ghali and Dr. Jon Meddings will be inducted into the Academy at the CAHS Annual General Meeting in Ottawa on September 30, 2010. The CAHS recognizes individuals of great accomplishment and achievement in the academic health sciences in Canada.

  • Dr. William (Bill) Ghali , Director, Calgary Institute for Population & Public Health, Professor, Departments of Medicine and Community Health Sciences and Buchanan Chair General Internal Medicine: Dr. Ghali has a key leadership role in the Ward of the 21st Century (W21C) Initiative. He holds a Canada Research Chair in Health Services Research and is an Alberta Heritage Foundation for Medical Research Senior Health Scholar.

  • Dr. Marvin J. Fritzler , Professor, Departments of Medicine and Biochemistry & Molecular Biology: Dr. Fritzler’s research focuses on the identification of novel autoantigens that are the targets of the immune response in a number of autoimmune diseases. His work has led to the development of new diagnostic assays and technologies for autoimmune diseases.

  • Dr. Jon Meddings , Professor and Vice Dean, Faculty of Medicine: The former Head of the Division of Gastroenterology at the University of Calgary, and Chair of the DOM at the University of Alberta, Dr. Medding’s research concentrates on celiac disease, inflammatory bowel disease and bowel permeability.
