Dr. Jennifer WilliamsThe Department of Medicine is pleased to announce that Dr. Jennifer Williams has been appointed as the Deputy Department Head, Clinical for the Department of Medicine, effective January 1, 2021.

Dr. Jennifer Williams is a Clinical Associate Professor in the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology. She completed her MD with Dean’s list honours at Memorial University of Newfoundland and completed her general internal medicine and gastroenterology fellowship at the University of Calgary. She began her professional career practicing both General Internal Medicine and General Gastroenterology. Maintaining an active general gastroenterology practice allows her to sustain an accurate understanding of the factors influencing wellness which front-line physicians encounter on a daily basis and provides availability to cultivate relationships with a diverse physician perspective.

Dr. Williams has represented and advocated for colleagues, patients and the profession in various roles, including as Site Lead for Gastroenterology at the Rockyview Hospital and delegate to the Alberta Medical Association (AMA) Representative Forum for the Section of Gastroenterology. She was also a founding member and inaugural Chair of the Specialty Care Alliance within the AMA, an initiative aimed at creating specialty collaboration and representation as well as unity of the profession. She is serving her second elected term on the AMA Board of Directors.

Dr. Williams has developed passion, expertise and ongoing growth in the areas of physician wellness, leadership development and equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI). She has completed the Stanford Chief Wellness Officer Course and the Leadership Development course at the Cumming School of Medicine and Haskayne School of Business. She holds a number of roles in the area of wellness and professional fulfillment, including as physician associate and collaborator with Well Doc Alberta and the Equity and Diversity Working Group with the DOM. In addition, she is an integral team member in the ongoing development of the AMA’s Healthy Work Environments Initiative which focuses on psycho-social wellness & safety, diversity, inclusion & equity, and leadership. In November, 2020 she accepted the role of Medical Representative South Sector, Physician Wellness and Diversity with Alberta Health Services.

Dr. Williams is a system level thinker and her unique area of interest is the interconnections of EDI, wellness, psychosocial health and safety and leadership in creating an aspirational culture where all are valued and supported to thrive to achieve physician wellness and fulfillment, improved patient outcomes and satisfaction, and system sustainability.

2020 has been a time of change and uncertainty for physicians and someone once said “With tremendous change comes tremendous opportunity “. Dr. Williams believes we can achieve wonderful things through physician engagement and development of highly functioning teams as we navigate the tremendous opportunities this turmoil has created, together.

Dr. Williams is excited to join the DOM team with her collaborative, inclusive and compassionate leadership to strengthen relationships and understanding with individuals, stakeholders and the system to build a culture and highly functioning teams where we can all thrive and achieve our best selves.
