Dr. Karen FruetelEffective September 1, Dr. Karen Fruetel will be taking on the leadership position as Section/Division Head of Geriatric Medicine, as well as Medical Director, AHS Calgary zone Specialized Geriatric Services and Transition Services.

She will also be continuing in her role as Vice Chair of Education within the Department of Medicine. She is coming back from her sabbatical as a Certified Executive Coach and will be spending part of her time providing leadership coaching to members within the department.

Dr Fruetel completed her undergraduate medical training at the University of Western Ontario followed by specialty training in Internal Medicine and Geriatrics at the University of Calgary and University of Toronto. She holds a Master of Education degree from the University of Toronto. Prior to being recruited to Calgary in 2008, she held faculty positions at the University of Toronto and the University of Western Ontario and held multiple leadership positions in Education (Program Director for Geriatric Medicine – Toronto and Internal Medicine – Western) and Clinical Services (Deputy Head, Department of Medicine, Site Chief of Medicine).

She was recruited to Calgary as Section Head for Geriatrics and the Medical Director of Specialized Geriatric Services, a position she held until 2016. From 2008-2016 she also held leadership roles as the Medical Leader of Seniors, Palliative and Continuing Care and Acting Associate Zone Medical Director.

The Department welcomes Dr. Fruetel back from sabbatical and into these new leadership roles as of September 1.
