Drs. Jeff Schaefer and Kelly Zarnke – Interim Zone Clinical & Academic Department Heads
We are pleased to announce that Dr. Jeffrey Schaefer and Dr. Kelly Zarnke have been appointed the interim Zone Clinical and Academic Department Heads, respectively, for the Department of Medicine, effective January 1, 2020.

Wendy Desjardins-Kallar – Zone Clinical Department Manager
We are pleased to announce that Wendy Desjardins-Kallar joined the Department of Medicine as the new Zone Clinical Department Manager on December 9, 2019.
Wendy began her career at AHS as a Respiratory Therapist at FMC and RGH in 2003. Since then, she has worked as a Clinical Educator and Supervisor within Respiratory Therapy at RGH and PLC, and then took on the role of Clinical Safety Lead for the PLC site, Critical Care and Women’s Health portfolios. In the spring of 2018, as a Senior Project Manager, she was responsible to plan and help operationalize the Addiction Recovery and Community Health (ARCH) program at PLC. After its successful launch, in late 2018 Wendy became a Unit Manager at the PLC responsible for Unit 41 (pediatric inpatients), the Cast Clinic, Vascular Outpatient Clinic, and Vascular Surgery Administrative Support team. In 2017, Wendy received her Masters of Health Studies, specializing in Health Administration from Athabasca University.

Dr. Sofia Ahmed – Vice Chair, Research
We are pleased to announce that Dr. Sofia Ahmed has been appointed the Vice Chair of Research for the Department of Medicine, effective January 1, 2020.
Dr. Ahmed is a specialist in nephrology and a Professor in the Department of Medicine, as well as the Sex and Gender Lead for the Can-SOLVE CKD Network. She has research expertise in sex differences in human cardiorenal physiology and translational research.
Dr. Ahmed’s research interests are in the study of how women and men differ in terms of progression and complications of kidney disease, and how factors such as sleep apnea and nutrition play a role. She completed her MD and internal medicine residency at the University of Toronto and a renal fellowship at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Massachusetts General Hospital.
Dr. Ahmed completed her Master’s in medical sciences at Harvard University. She is an Alberta Innovates – Health Solutions Investigator and is leading projects supported by the Kidney Foundation of Canada and the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada.
